If in their latest news update, Kill Rock Stars is backtracking to boast about a random 2002 5RC compilation which included a track by the unknown VV and the Hotel, then The Kills must be a pretty big deal these days. And they are, despite the self-deprecating title of their sophomore album, No Wow. Two years after their debut, Keep On Your Mean Side, the Kills have managed to retain a respectable amount of cool, even though they’ve traded in muffled snippets of conversation for more user-friendly and mind-numbingly redundant choruses. Hey, let’s face it, The Kills are hip, I know so just from looking at all the typewriter front and blurred black-and-white photography crowding the layout of their album art. Still, their sound just misses the commercially accessible hooks of the White Stripes, while failing to distinguish its bare-bones approach from the similar sounds of lesser known bands such as The Eagles of Death Metal. And though the album is perfect for complimenting the feel of sweaty skin stuck to leather seats during backseat summer makeouts, after a few tracks you might just be bored enough to sell your soul to Meg and Jack, and Get Behind Satan.
